Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that results in chronic (long-term) inflammation of the spine. Its name is pronounced ankle-oh-sing spon-dill-eye-tiss. The sacroiliac joints, which are situated between the base of the spine and the pelvis, are inflamed by ankylosing spondylitis (AS). One of the first indications of AS is this inflammation, known medically as sacroiliitis. The joints between the vertebrae, the bones that make up the spinal column, are frequently affected by inflammation. Spondylitis is the name of this illness. Some AS sufferers have excruciating, chronic back and hip pain as well as stiffness. Others experience sporadic, weaker symptoms. The spine may become inflexible as a result of new bone formations that eventually fuse vertebral segments together. The name of this condition is ankylosis.
